Hydronic Heating Under Timber Flooring: What You Need to Know

Hydronic underfloor heating has become one of the most requested features in new builds and major renovations — and for good reason. It delivers even, radiant warmth without the dust circulation of ducted systems or the visual clutter of wall units. But timber and heat have a complicated relationship, and getting the combination right takes more planning than laying flooring over a standard slab. Here's what you need to know before you commit.

Can you install timber flooring over hydronic heating?

Yes — but not every timber floor is suitable, and the ones that are require careful selection and installation. Engineered timber flooring is generally compatible with hydronic systems, while solid timber is generally not recommended, due to how each product responds to sustained heat and the temperature swings a heating system introduces.

The key issue is moisture and dimensional movement. Timber naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, and a hydronic system actively changes both, right underneath the floor, every time it cycles on and off.

Why engineered flooring is the better match

Engineered timber's cross-layered core construction — alternating layers of plywood running in different directions — gives it far greater dimensional stability than solid timber. This matters enormously over hydronic heating, where the subfloor temperature is actively controlled and can fluctuate through the day and across seasons.

Solid timber, by contrast, is a single continuous piece of timber that responds far more dramatically to sustained heat. Over a heated slab, solid boards are far more prone to excessive shrinkage, gapping, cupping or cracking — problems that tend to show up gradually, often outside typical warranty windows, and are difficult to correct without replacing the floor.

What to check before choosing your board

Not every engineered product is rated for hydronic heating, so don't assume compatibility just because a floor is engineered. A few things to confirm before you order:

  • Manufacturer rating – Ask specifically whether the product is rated and warranted for use over hydronic (or any) underfloor heating. This should be stated explicitly, not assumed.
  • Core construction – A quality multi-ply hardwood core generally performs more predictably under sustained heat than a lower-grade fibreboard core.
  • Total board thickness – Thinner engineered boards transfer heat more efficiently and respond more predictably than thicker boards, which can insulate the heat and reduce the system's efficiency.
  • Species and colour – Darker timbers and certain species are more prone to visible movement or colour change under sustained heat exposure than others; ask your supplier which species in the range perform best over a heated subfloor.

Installation and commissioning matter as much as the product

Getting timber over hydronic heating right isn't only about product selection — the installation sequence has a direct impact on long-term performance.

Commission the system before flooring is installed. The slab needs to go through a proper heat-up and cool-down cycle, following the heating manufacturer's commissioning process, before any flooring goes down. Installing over a slab that hasn't been correctly commissioned and cured is one of the most common causes of flooring failure over hydronic systems.

Control the ramp-up in temperature. Once flooring is installed, the heating should be introduced gradually rather than switched straight to full temperature. A slow ramp-up, following the flooring manufacturer's specific guidance, gives the timber time to adjust without shocking it.

Stay within the recommended surface temperature. Most engineered flooring manufacturers cap the recommended maximum surface temperature — commonly around 27°C, though this varies by product. Exceeding this consistently increases the risk of movement, gapping and coating damage over time, and can void your flooring warranty even if the heating system itself is functioning correctly.

Use the correct moisture barrier and adhesive. Adhesives and moisture barriers suited to heated subfloors are not always the same as those used for a standard slab — confirm with your installer that the products being used are specifically rated for hydronic applications.

What to expect day to day

Even with the right product and installation, it's normal for a timber floor over hydronic heating to show some seasonal movement — very slight gaps that open in the depths of winter with the heating running, and close again as conditions even out through the rest of the year. This is expected behaviour, not a defect, provided it stays within the tolerances specified by the manufacturer.

What shouldn't happen is persistent cupping, visible cracking, or gaps that don't close again once the heating cycle ends — these are signs the product, installation, or heating operation needs to be reviewed.

Getting the combination right from the start

Timber flooring and hydronic heating can absolutely work together beautifully, but it's a combination that rewards careful planning far more than most flooring decisions. The right engineered product, a properly commissioned slab, correct installation materials, and a considered temperature ramp-up are what separate a floor that performs for decades from one that causes problems within the first year.
